Telugu Film Industry Holds Major Meeting to Resolve Revenue and OTT Release Conflict

The Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce is holding a high-stakes meeting today, May 15, 2026, to address growing tensions between film producers and theater owners (exhibitors). This industry-wide deadlock comes at a critical time as several major films are preparing for release this summer.

Key Issues on the Table

The discussions, led by Film Chamber President D. Suresh Babu, are focused on two main areas of disagreement:

  • Revenue Sharing Model: Exhibitors are pushing to replace the current fixed rental system with a percentage-based revenue-sharing model. Under the current system, single-screen theaters often face losses if a film performs poorly, as they must still pay a flat fee regardless of ticket sales.
  • OTT Release Window: Exhibitors are demanding a longer gap between a movie’s theatrical release and its digital premiere on streaming platforms to help protect box office earnings.

The Meeting Participants

A diverse group of representatives from across the industry is attending to reach a solution:

  • Exhibitors: A 10-member team is representing the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Exhibitors Associations.
  • Producers: Three key members from the Producers Guild are attending to represent filmmakers.
  • Distributors: Representatives for distributors are also involved in the broader discussions aimed at restoring industry balance.

Industry Perspectives

The situation has become increasingly sensitive, with some disagreements reportedly turning personal in recent days.

  • C. Kalyan: The senior producer described the current situation as highly sensitive and in need of immediate attention.
  • Producers’ Concerns: Producers like Yalamanchili Ravi Shankar, Suryadevara Naga Vamsi, and Sahu Garapati have noted that they are also facing severe financial challenges. They have raised concerns about the lack of modern infrastructure and reliable ticket-tracking systems in some single-screen theaters.
  • Bunny Vas: The producer suggested the industry must address deeper issues, such as the need for stronger content and faster film completion by stars, rather than just fighting over shrinking revenues.
  • Natti Kumar: Highlighting internal turmoil, the Telugu Film Producer Council Joint Secretary recently resigned, citing a lack of transparency and accountability within the organization.

The Telugu Film Chamber hopes this meeting will move both sides toward a fair agreement that supports the survival of the theatrical business while allowing producers to remain profitable.
