Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay Begins Tenure with Landmark Decisions

Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), was officially sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, May 10, 2026.

The Swearing-In Ceremony

The event took place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay in front of thousands of emotional fans and supporters. This ceremony marks a historic shift in Tamil Nadu politics, ending nearly 60 years of rule by the DMK and AIADMK.

Immediate Actions on Day One

Right after taking the oath, Chief Minister Vijay went to his office at Fort St. George and signed several important files to fulfill his campaign promises:

  • Free Electricity: Every family in Tamil Nadu will now receive 200 units of free power.
  • Women’s Safety: A special unit dedicated to the protection of women will be established.
  • Anti-Drug Campaign: A new task force has been formed to specifically handle and prevent drug smuggling.

A New Coalition Government

Vijay’s party, TVK, emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats. To reach the majority mark, he secured the support of allies including the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML, bringing his total support to 120 MLAs.

Key Details:

  • The Cabinet: Along with Vijay, nine ministers were sworn in, including N. Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, and S. Keerthana.
  • Official Attire: Breaking from his usual campaign look, Vijay attended the ceremony in a black blazer and black pants.
  • Upcoming Vote: The Governor has directed the new government to seek a vote of confidence in the Assembly on or before May 13, 2026.

A New Political Era

In his first address as Chief Minister, Vijay promised a transparent and smooth government for everyone. High-profile guests, including Rahul Gandhi and many stars from the Tamil film industry, attended the ceremony to witness this major change in the state’s leadership.
