Tamil Nadu is seeing a historic change in its government. Actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, TVK (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam), have won a huge victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Election Highlights
- The Big Win: TVK won 108 seats, making it the largest party in the state. This ended nearly 50 years of control by the two main traditional parties (DMK and AIADMK). +1
- A New Leader: Joseph Vijay is expected to be sworn in as the next Chief Minister on May 7. The ceremony will likely take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.
- MK Stalin Defeated: The current Chief Minister, MK Stalin, lost his own seat in Kolathur to TVK candidate VS Babu. Mr. Stalin has already resigned from his position.
Forming the Government
To run the government, a party needs 118 seats. Since TVK has 108, they are only 10 seats short. They are expected to partner with other groups, like the Congress or Left parties, to reach the majority mark.
Why This Matters
This is a “watershed moment” for the state. For the first time since 1977, Tamil Nadu will be led by a party other than the DMK or AIADMK. Vijay now joins the ranks of other legendary actors who became powerful political leaders in India.
