Top producers in the Telugu film industry have decided not to follow the strict rule of waiting eight weeks before releasing their movies on streaming platforms (OTT).
The Decision Against the 8-Week Window In North India, there is a strict rule that movies must wait eight weeks after their cinema release before they can stream online. However, after several meetings, Telugu producers have collectively said “no” to this rule. They prefer to have the freedom to stream their films much sooner—often in less than a month.
Why Producers Want Early Streaming:
- Declining Theater Attendance: Fewer people are visiting cinemas lately. Producers have noticed that the number of viewers drops significantly after the first week, leaving very little profit in the second week.
- Financial Pressure: Many producers are under a lot of financial stress. They need to recover a large portion of their movie’s budget quickly, and selling digital rights for an early OTT release helps them get that money back.
- The Nizam Region Issue: There are also ongoing theater-related issues in the Nizam area that have yet to be settled, adding more pressure on the filmmakers.
The Current Situation Because there is no official agreement to wait longer, individual producers are making their own choices. Most are choosing to sell their films to OTT platforms for early release to ensure they don’t lose money, even if it means the movie stays in theaters for a shorter time.
