Content Wins Over Star Power: Lokesh Kanagaraj’s DC Becomes 2026’s Highest-Grossing Tamil Film in Kerala

Movie goers in Kerala have a well-known reputation for being very selective about the films they support. In “God’s Own Country,” even massive blockbusters backed by heavy hype sometimes crash at the box office after a strong opening. Conversely, films that begin quietly can build momentum through word-of-mouth and turn into major financial successes.

Director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s latest action drama, DC, is the latest proof of this trend.

DC Sets a New Box Office Record

Starting as a sleeper hit, DC achieved an impressive milestone by officially becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026 in the state of Kerala. So far, the movie has earned Rs. 16.5 crores gross in the state.

With this box office total, DC surpassed Thalapathy Vijay’s high-profile film Jana Nayagan, which suffered from weak word-of-mouth that restricted its overall performance.

A Pattern of Surprises in Kerala

DC isn’t the only unexpected success in the region this year. In another surprise result, the movie Blast, starring Arjun, outperformed and collected more money than Suriya’s film Karuppu.

These outcomes show that audience preferences in Kerala continue to favor solid content over pure star appeal.
